There is no single storage size that fits every system

Recording retention depends on several factors working together: camera count, resolution, frame rate or bitrate, compression, recording hours and whether the system records continuously or on events. Choosing a drive only from the number of cameras can therefore give a poor estimate.

Main factors that affect storage

• Camera count: every additional channel adds recorded data.
• Resolution and image quality: higher quality usually needs more space when other settings stay the same.
• Recording rate: higher frame rate or bitrate increases data usage.
• Compression: H.265 or other supported compression settings may reduce usage compared with older settings, depending on the device and scene.
• Recording mode: continuous recording typically uses more space than event-based recording in quiet sites.
• Retention period: more days of history require more capacity.

Start with the retention period the site actually needs

First decide how many days you need to review after an incident, then size storage using the real recording settings. A business that needs longer historical review has different requirements from a home that keeps a shorter window.

Continuous or motion/event recording?

Continuous recording gives a complete timeline but consumes more storage. Motion or event recording can reduce usage, but detection settings need to be configured carefully so important events are not missed and false activity does not create unnecessary recordings.

Why use the device's actual settings?

A planning estimate is useful, but final retention is affected by scene complexity, bitrate, compression settings and the specific camera and recorder. After installation, check the real channel settings and review the actual retention window.

Checks before handover

• Confirm the storage drive is detected and healthy in the recorder.
• Test searching, playing and exporting an earlier recording.
• Verify date, time and time-zone settings across all channels.
• Review actual retention after several days of operation.
