A professional CCTV installation is a sequence of design and verification steps, not simply mounting cameras. The installer should know what each camera needs to see, how video and power will reach it, where recordings will be stored and how the completed system will be tested.
1. Survey the site and define coverage
Walk the entrances, perimeter, parking, internal routes and high-risk areas. Mark the purpose of each camera and the distance at which useful detail is required. Check lighting, mounting surfaces, weather exposure and the location of the recorder, switches and network equipment.
2. Select camera positions before cable routes
Camera height and field of view should support the security objective. Avoid positions blocked by signs, shelves or doors, and consider direct sunlight, backlight and infrared reflection. Confirm that outdoor cameras can be serviced safely after installation.
3. Plan cabling and power
IP systems commonly use Ethernet and PoE; analog systems commonly use coaxial video plus suitable power. Keep cable routes protected, label both ends, respect network and power limits, and avoid poor connectors or temporary extensions that create intermittent faults.
4. Configure the recorder and network
Set descriptive camera names, date and time, recording schedules, stream settings and storage behavior. For IP systems, document addresses and switch ports where appropriate. Remote access should use authorized accounts, with administrative ownership kept under the customer’s control.
5. Set the storage target
Choose recording capacity based on camera count, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec and required retention. After the system has recorded normally, verify the real oldest available footage rather than relying only on a calculator.
6. Test day and night performance
Review important views during actual lighting conditions. Check entrances with backlight, dark exterior areas and any camera near walls that may reflect infrared. Adjust angle or exposure only after confirming the security target is still covered.
7. Test recording and export
Playback should be checked from several cameras and times. Export a short sample clip to confirm retrieval works. A live image is not proof that footage is being stored correctly.
8. Complete handover
Explain mobile access, playback, export and basic fault indicators. Document credentials ownership, device locations and any settings that future maintenance will need. The final acceptance should confirm camera views, storage, time, remote access and recording.
Summary
A reliable installation is designed, labeled, documented and tested. Correct positioning and cabling prevent many faults, while playback and handover testing confirm that the system is useful after the installer leaves.
