Access Control Systems Guide
Start with doors, users, authentication methods and permissions before choosing the reader or controller.
Define the purpose first
A project may control one staff door, several entrances, visitor access or employee movement. The objective determines the reader, controller, lock and software requirements.
Common authentication methods
- RFID card or key fob.
- Fingerprint verification.
- Face recognition for higher-throughput entrances.
- PIN or mobile credentials where supported.
Door hardware and locks
The door type affects whether a magnetic lock, electric strike or other hardware is appropriate. Exit buttons, door sensors, power supply and emergency behavior must be planned together.
Permissions and audit logs
Define who can enter each door, during which hours, and who can add users or review logs. Clear permissions reduce shared-key risk and simplify administration.
Network and integration
For networked systems, review IP addressing, connectivity, configuration backup and any required integration with attendance or intercom systems.
Handover checks
- Test each credential type.
- Test exit buttons and door sensors.
- Verify time, logs and user permissions.
- Handover administrator access and user-management steps.
